Everyone loves their pets, and it’s only natural that you want to bring them along with you whenever you go out and run errands. The thing is, some stores are pet-friendly and some stores aren’t, and it’s your responsibility as a pet parent to find out which one is which.
If you’re going to Ace Hardware, you can rest easy because they are, in fact, a pet-friendly store. Of course, there are some exceptions to this rule because some of the locations across the country do not allow pets in their stores.
Is Ace Hardware Dog-Friendly?
For the most part, Ace Hardware is dog-friendly, meaning you can bring your dog with you when you go in there to shop.
Some restrictions do apply, however, especially when it comes to the dog’s breed, size, and behavior. There is no official Ace Hardware pet policy that could be found online, but most Ace Hardware stores do allow them to enter the store.
That being said, in most of the 4,000 Ace Hardware stores across the U.S., pets are allowed to visit the facilities along with their owners, but certain expectations apply.
For instance, your dog has to be on a leash and must be well-behaved. If your dog starts to get agitated or aggressive, you could very well be asked to leave regardless of their policy.
Keep in mind that Ace Hardware stores are individually owned; therefore, some of them may have a no-pet policy. They do this for several reasons, but the point is that if you want to learn the policy for your local Ace Hardware store, always call them and check with the manager. This is the best way to prevent an awkward situation from happening in the future.
Getting More Specific About the Policy
A pet-friendly store will usually have a few restrictions and exceptions to this rule, but once you hear what they are, it’s easy to understand why they put those restrictions in place. Here are a few of them that are important to learn:
- Your dog has to be either on a leash or carried in your arms (or in a carrier)
- You are responsible for immediately cleaning up any mess they make
- If your dog starts to get aggressive, you’ll have to leave
- At no time is your dog allowed to roam free without a leash
- Your dog has to be by your side the entire time you’re in the store
As you can imagine, the number-one rule for stores that are pet-friendly is this: the owner of the dog is legally responsible for anything that happens while you’re in the store. This includes cleaning up messes and keeping your dog quiet and in control the entire time. The manager of the store always has the right to ask you to leave if anything goes awry.
What About Service Dogs and ESAs?
Service dogs and emotional support animals (ESAs) are also allowed in Ace Hardware stores if the store is pet-friendly, but what about the stores with a no-pet policy?
By law, service dogs must be allowed in any store, regardless of their policy. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it is illegal to prevent service dogs from entering your store.
As far as ESAs are concerned, each store is different. If they allow service dogs only, they may or may not allow ESAs. This is because service dogs are trained to help their owners with certain conditions, whereas ESAs are only there for emotional support and nothing else.
ESAs don’t have any special training, so even if service dogs are allowed in a particular store, ESAs may not be allowed.
How Is the Policy Determined?
Ace Hardware stores are franchises that are owned by different people, which is why the pet policy is different with each location. It is up to the manager to decide if their particular location will allow dogs inside, and several factors come into play.
If you live in a rural area, for instance, the stores may be more likely to allow pets simply because the stores tend to be less crowded.
On the other hand, a store located in the middle of the city and which tends to be more crowded and loud may not allow pets simply because there are so many people there. This is why it is necessary for you to contact your local Ace Hardware store so you’ll know for sure. You cannot just assume that since one store allows dogs that the one near you will too.
After all, the Ace Hardware Fairwood in Washington State may have a different policy than Rylee’s Ace Hardware in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In the end, some managers may be concerned about a potential lawsuit if a dog gets unruly and scares or bites another customer, which could be the reason for their no-pet policy. In other words, each store is different, which is a good thing to remember.
Ace Hardware’s unofficial policy is that their stores are indeed pet-friendly. You can bring your dogs into most Ace Hardware stores, but since not every single store allows pets, you’ll need to check with your local store to determine if they are pet-friendly or do not allow animals in their store.
The manager of the store will be happy to answer your questions about this policy.
If your local store does allow animals, make sure that you keep your dog on a leash or carrier and that you clean up any mess they may make while there.
